Understanding Medical Aid in Dying

Description

The Understanding Medical Aid in Dying workshop provides an overview of the differences between the two types of requests for medical aid in dying: the contemporaneous request (for medical aid in dying in the near future) and the advance request. It also explains how to request medical aid in dying and how the process unfolds depending on the type of request. Participants listen to short audio clips of an interview with Véronique Hivon, a former member of the National Assembly of Quebec, who led the development of the Act Respecting End-of-Life Care.

Note:

• This workshop deals with death, which can bring up difficult emotions. It’s strongly recommended to have a psychosocial support worker be present during the workshop, if possible.
• For in person workshops, we encourage you to have paper and pens available, so participants can write down their thoughts.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• Distinguish between contemporaneous and advance requests for medical aid in dying.
• Explain how to request and receive medical aid in dying.
• Find reliable legal tools and resources.
